LCGC started out as the Chinese Gospel Mission and was located in Nelson Street. When the lease on the property ended they started using St. Michael in the City Anglican Church.
In 1977 premises became available in Great George Square and they decided to rent the former Far East Restaurant, which they later bought. The building was a dump with broken windows, a leaking roof, no electricity and piles of rubbish everywhere. Over a hundred skips of rubbish were removed as student donned overalls each weekend to slowly help renovate the building. Soon after obtaining the building, the Mission was registered as a church on February 20th 1978.
During this time the Church has slowly grown in Chinatown as it reached out mainly toward the Chinese community. Apart from the regular Sunday services and event the Church also began reaching out in other ways with a Chinese School for children, English classes for adults who wish to improve their English, and Kids’ Summer Clubs etc. They have also been quite involved in the yearly Chinese New Year celebrations that take place in Chinatown.
Previously we also hosted a Luncheon Club that catered especially for the Elderly Chinese. More and more the Church is getting involved in other community projects and wants to look beyond the Chinese community and make a difference in the local community as well.
The church moved again in 2001, having raised money to build new facilities a few doors away from their old premises, which is where we meet now. On most days of the week we use the rear entrance to the building where there is a small carpark.
